The Kids Are All Right

Scene stealers on parade!

It’s true, I believe that every wedding with children in the party needs baby bouncers, or maybe professional rug rat wranglers.  However, it’s also true that I think kids are great at ceremonies (after all, my primary concern is the pictures, and nobody makes for better moments than they do). Flower girls and ring bearers can be too cute for words, and no one elicits so many smiles, OOOHs, and AAAAHs as the little ones all dressed up and on a mission. This pint-sized princess is so adorable you might forget there’s a bride following her down the aisle:

But remember, they’re unpredictable (which is why I, as a photographer, love them).  And to a toddler, what could be more intense than standing all alone at the back of an enormous room in a strange building filled with a couple hundred grownups you don’t know, each with a camera up to their face pointed directly at YOU?  Then comes the gentle shove from behind, urging you to march down that endless alley that looks like it’s three miles long, so far away that your mom (the maid of honor) is only a small speck in the distance.  And even if you could make out her face clearly you would see a frozen smile masking pure panic.  I don’t know about you, but I think the correct response IS to burst into tears (no matter what your age).  Even kids who have shown a high level of enthusiasm for the job often freak out when it comes time to march in, a sort of stage fright for minors.  I’ve seen them wander off, seemingly on a quest for another wedding, or do a full Usain Bolt and sprint down the aisle so fast I could barely get a picture as they blew by.  And then there are the baskets of flower petals.  No matter how many times the scenario has been explained and rehearsed, the little cuties usually do one of two things: forget about them altogether and arrive at the front of the church with all the petals still in the basket, or dump about ninety-eight percent of them within the first two steps they take, leaving nothing for the rest of the road ahead.  But my favorite is the neat freak flower girl who assumes someone has made a mess and stops to try to pick up every one of the petals on her way in.  Cute without a doubt, but a bit time consuming.

But none of that really matters.  Crying or smiling, tripping or running, terrified or eating up their moment in the spotlight, they are universally adorable and everyone loves them.  So by all means go for it and include the little ones.  Just make a solemn cross-your-heart promise never to embarrass them with the photos or the video once they get to a more vulnerable age. Like anything over nine.
